The correspondence between Dr Bill, the Lambeth Palace Librarian and Archbishop Michael Ramsey detail the need for support for the library and expansion of the collections. The Archbishop was supportive and keen for more organisation to improve the quality and content of the collections, as you can see from this letter about newly acquired bibles and the Archbishop’s intention to visit the library to see them. Prior to the formation of the Friends, any new acquisitions had to be funded either by the Archbishop or the Librarian. Conversations between Dr Bill and the Archbishop were the genesis of the foundation of the Friends.
